Check out our wonderful and very creative gingerbread house! How did this all start?

Nat and some children made gingerbread men! Initially, the idea for baking wasn’t gingerbread men but “Zombie food!” Yep, a bit of a different direction there. We unfortunately we didn’t have the ingredients that we would have needed for zombie food and Jayce then asked if we could make some gingerbread men instead. We looked up what we needed and I had the ingredients at home and said I’d bring them in the next day to bake. The kids loved baking and decorating the little men. They were pretty delicious too ☺

Then Peta brought in some boxes. Children started to make a castle and they became a really good place to sit and hide in. After a little while, it started to fall down, so Sallyanne utilised the lids to the boxes and made them into a roof. Then with all the excitement from the gingerbread men, of course they needed a gingerbread house to live in!

So through conversations about what a gingerbread house needs, children set off to decorate it. First we needed to paint it. Children picked the colours and it was decided it needed a pink roof and brown walls.

To help capture the children’s voices, we decided to use our floor book to design our interpretation of a gingerbread house.

Lots of ideas started to flood in about what we could use. It is great to hear children know that they can ask for and use a variety of reusable resources. Once we had gathered our supplies, the children got to work! Some children spent over a solid hour focused on their creation. Even children who would normally prefer other means of play, found themselves drawn to this experience.

The next day as children arrived, I couldn’t help but smile when I could hear the children say, “Come and have a look at our Gingerbread House I helped make!”

Can’t wait to do our next experience when we make our very own edible gingerbread house!
